If you want to go anywhere fast in Cyprus between 11th and 13th July 2008, you’ll have some serious competition! The Historic Cyprus Rally brings vintage rally cars and their drivers to enjoy the sunshine of Cyprus - and a competitive race or two. This follows hot on the heels (or should that be, hot on the wheels) of the 20th International Historic Car Rally held back in May.

Organised by the Cyprus Automobile Association under the auspices of FiA, the first leg of this Historic Regularity Rally starts at Eleftherias Square in Nicosia at 6pm on Friday 11th July, with the other two legs starting from the Hilton Hotel on the next two days. Cars will set off a one minute intervals to roar, slide, and hopefully complete their journeys in the summer heat!

All cars participating in the Historic Cyprus Rally are divided into categories according to their vintage, with the oldest cars in competition in Period B, built between 1 January 1905 and 31 December 1918. The youngest cars, in period I, must have been built by 31 December 1981.

If it all sounds too much like an excuse for a drive in the Cyprus sunshine, think again. This is no jolly motoring holiday in Cyprus for the drivers; all competitors firmly have their eye on the ultimate prize, the FIA Trophy for Historic Regularity Rallies.

Historic rallying, however, is not a cheap sport. Spare a thought for anyone who breaks down in Cyprus; they would have spend Euro2750 per car just to come and participate in this rally. Mind you, that does include car transport from Italy to Cyprus, four nights accommodation in a Cyprus hotel, and breakfast, but not any repair bills…
